What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and recommend. Where classic SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links, GEO aims to have ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews name your business when someone asks a question you can answer.
That shift matters because more buyers now start research by asking an assistant, “Which agency should I hire for X?” or “What is the best way to do Y?”, and they often act on the short list the answer gives them.
How AI assistants decide what to cite
Each assistant works differently, but most answers that cite sources combine two things: what the model already learned during training, and pages it retrieves from the web at answer time. That gives you two levers.
- Retrieval: your pages must be crawlable, fast, clearly structured and relevant to the exact question, so the assistant’s search step finds and quotes them.
- Reputation: your brand must be described consistently across your site and third-party sources, so the model treats you as a known, trustworthy entity.
A practical GEO checklist
1. Fix technical access first
Make sure your robots.txt does not block the crawlers used by AI search tools, your XML sitemap is submitted to Google and Bing, and key pages load quickly without relying on scripts to show their text.
2. Lead every page with the answer
Open service pages and articles with a 40-60 word summary that directly answers the main question. Assistants frequently lift these short, self-contained passages.
3. Write in questions and facts
Use headings phrased the way people ask, add clear definitions, comparison tables, step lists and FAQs, and include specifics such as prices, timelines, locations and named tools where you can stand behind them.
4. Add structured data
Organization, Person, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article schema help search engines and AI systems connect your pages to your brand, founder and services.
5. Build entity consistency
Use the same business name, founder name, description, email and phone everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories like Clutch and GoodFirms, and press mentions.
6. Earn mentions on sources AI reads
Reviews, industry directories, podcasts, guest articles and community answers create the third-party context that makes models comfortable recommending you.
7. Publish an llms.txt file
An llms.txt file is a short, plain-text summary of who you are with links to your key pages. It is an emerging convention rather than a guaranteed ranking factor, but it is quick to add and gives AI systems a clean overview.
8. Measure AI visibility
Track a fixed set of buyer questions each month across the major assistants, note whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited, and watch AI referral traffic in analytics.

FAQs
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI assistants still rely heavily on content that ranks and is well structured, so GEO builds on strong SEO rather than replacing it.
How do I know if AI assistants mention my brand?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your buyers ask, record which brands appear, and repeat monthly. Analytics can also show referral visits from AI tools.
What is llms.txt?
A plain-text file at the root of your site that summarises who you are and links to your most important pages, written for AI systems to read.
